Hammam Ritual · 5 min read

The Moroccan hammam ritual at home, step by step

Black soap, kessa glove, nila and ghassoul: how to recreate the traditional hammam in your own bathroom.

In Morocco, the hammam is a weekly ritual: warm steam, a deep cleanse and an exfoliation that leaves the skin incredibly soft. You don't need a steam room to enjoy it, just a hot shower and a little time.

What you need

Beldi black soap, a kessa exfoliating glove, and optionally nila scrub, ghassoul clay, rose water and argan oil for the finishing steps.

The ritual

  1. 1

Warm up: take a hot shower or bath for 5–10 minutes so the steam softens your skin.

  2. 2

Black soap: apply a thin layer of black soap all over damp skin. Leave it on for about 5 minutes and let the steam work.

  3. 3

Rinse, then exfoliate: rinse off the soap, put on the kessa glove and rub your skin in firm, straight strokes. You will see the dead skin come away.

  4. 4

Brighten (optional): massage nila scrub onto damp skin in circular motions, then rinse.

  5. 5

Purify (optional): mix ghassoul clay with water or rose water into a smooth paste, apply to the body or face for a few minutes, then rinse.

  6. 6

Nourish: on slightly damp skin, massage in a few drops of argan oil to lock in moisture.

How often?

Once a week is ideal for most skin types. Avoid exfoliating sunburnt, irritated or broken skin, and always do a patch test with a new product.
